Gibson extended a hand. Desmond accepted it and allowed the wildcard to pull him to his feet. He looked up the hillside. Infinity along with those who apparently shared her fixation on revenge were hiking steadily up the slope. She hadn’t even glanced back.
Gibson released Desmond’s hand and gazed up the hill. “You realize we have to stop them, right?”
Desmond rubbed his throat where Infinity had elbowed him. “They’re not exactly eager to listen to reason.”
“That’s true, but we still have to stop them. My mates and I didn’t volunteer for this endeavor just to be slaughtered by cloned aliens.”
“I can’t believe it,” Isabelle said. Daisy was starting to whimper and squirm in her arms. “Lenny didn’t even look at me after I voted against him. He didn’t even look at Daisy.”
Hayley put a hand on the back of her daughter’s neck. “Give me a chance to talk to them. They aren’t thinking clearly right now, but maybe I can get through to them.” She took her husband’s hand and the two headed up the slope.
“I don’t think this is going to end well,” Tessa said.
Sue added, “There’s going to be violence—either in our own group or with those Outlanders.”
Gibson turned to them sharply. “If all you have is pessimism, maybe you should shut the hell up.”
The two women looked down at the ground, while Latonya and Donica averted their eyes.
“Jesus,” said Vic, “you wildcards are fine pieces of work.”
Desmond sighed and started up the hill. He struggled to make sense of the recent developments. Just this morning everything seemed to be going well. Now the whole colony was splitting apart, and its future was uncertain at best. Most disturbing of all, though, was the look he’d seen in Infinity’s eyes. At this moment he should have been focusing on strategies for preventing the upcoming conflict, but her face was all he could think about. She had seemed so incensed, so outraged. Even worse, she obviously felt deep disappointment in Desmond, as if he had betrayed her.
By the time Desmond arrived at the camp, Infinity already had taken the three rifles from the Outlanders’ shelter. She was studying the controls of one of the weapons, impatiently pushing and pulling on things as she pointed the device’s muzzle toward the boxes assembled on the front of the bunker. Desmond stepped up beside her. He eyed the rifle in her hand as well as the two on the ground by her feet.
She glanced at him. “Don’t even think of touching those. We need all three.” She pushed her finger into a hole on the gun’s grip, and an almost silent pfft came from the weapon’s muzzle. “That’s how the damn thing works,” she muttered. She aimed the rifle at a specific spot in the boxes and fired again. Pfft.
She picked up the two spare rifles, as if she didn’t trust Desmond to leave them alone, and strode to the bunker.
Desmond wasn’t sure what to say, so he simply followed.
